Living with migraines can be debilitating, affecting not only your physical health but also your ability to live a fulfilling life. People often struggle for years with chronic migraines that seem to have no end in sight. This is how Kayla, a nurse, mother, and wife was able to overcome her migraines. Her migraines affected every aspect of her life. As a nurse, Kayla’s job demanded focus, compassion, and resilience — qualities that were often challenged by the throbbing pain and sensitivity to light and sound that came with her migraines. It was also difficult at home to spend time with family when Kayla was in constant debilitating pain.

Kayla’s journey to finding relief was not easy. She tried countless medications, altered her diet, and experimented with various lifestyle changes, but nothing seemed to provide lasting relief. We provided a comprehensive approach to provide lasting relief for Kayla’s debilitating migraines.

Kayla found our office through a Google search, showing that our office gave relief for her condition and we were close to the University of Tennessee Medical Center as well as many other Knoxville health centers. Kayla’s migraines were affecting every aspect of her life so we scheduled a same day appointment for examination and treatment.

We conducted a comprehensive evaluation and noticed the following findings regarding Kayla’s condition:

  • Spasm of the neck musculature
  • No neurological findings or red flags associated with a disc injury
  • Limited cervical range of motion in all directions
  • Full strength in all extremities

Here is a short video of functional tests that we performed with Kayla. These tests are important to determine different causes of migraines. Try these tests at home, how did you do?

After evaluating Kayla we discussed that her findings and prognosis are favorable. Based on her findings she would be able to get back to work and living her life pain free in a short time. We addressed one of her concerns that she would be able to return to her life without taking more medication.

Upon evaluation and imaging we consider these common conditions with Kayla as well as ruling out red flags.

  • Cervicogenic Headache: A cervicogenic headache is a headache that refers from neck pain and inflammation. Recent research has shown that this is a more prevalent cause of headaches. Inflammation of the joints, muscles, and ligaments of the neck can often cause a referring pain into the head, causing debilitating headaches. This condition requires that the neck inflammation be decreased with proper stretching, exercising, mobilization, and manipulation in order to address the accompanying headache.
  • Sinusitis: Sinus pressure, although very common is not normal. Pressure from a sinus infection can cause severe headache symptoms. Sinus headaches can cause a dull ache or pressure like pain in the face or head, often behind the eyes, cheekbones, forehead, or bridge of the nose. This type of headache is worse during certain times of the year or with exposure to certain allergens. This type of headache can be relieved by stopping exposure to allergens or relieving sinus pressure.
  • Chiari malformation: This is a rare condition in which parts of the brain stem protrude through the foramen magnum, or the bottom part of the skull. This is a genetic anomaly that affects the shape of the skull and often other genetic anomalies are often noted in these patients. This condition is often found upon soft tissue imaging when the patient complains of headaches that are not relieved with conventional methods. This is why MRI imaging is suggested if conventional treatments do not provide relief after a sufficient time frame. Surgical treatments are effective with low risk in managing these headaches if conservative treatment options are not effective.
  • Brain Tumor: Headaches can be a sign of brain tumors. Although rare, tumors should be considered if headaches are not relieved after sufficient conservative and medicinal treatment. Fortunately, most brain tumors can be detected and treated effectively if headache relief is not achieved in an appropriate time frame.

I discussed our treatment plan with Kayla. We could achieve the results she desired with chiropractic adjustments, active release technique, and specific exercises. Our goal based on Kayla’s findings would be to relieve her headaches significantly within 2 weeks. Kayla should be expected to be able to return to work pain free in the following 2-4 weeks with limited pain. Our treatment plan is geared to get Kayla returning to doing the things she loves in the shortest time, we then give home exercises to keep this condition from coming back.

Here is a video of exercises for migraine relief we do in office and you can do at home.

With our guidance and treatment plan, Kayla was able to return to work and family life completely pain free.

Kayla has maintained her results in the office by doing specific home exercises after her acute phase of care.

If you are struggling with migraines or chronic pain, you do not have to continue dealing with pain. Specific chiropractic care with home exercise and a comprehensive health approach can get you out of pain and back to doing the things you love to do.
